Keep Up to Date with The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill
Destination Hotels & Resorts Appoints Mark Sherburne as New General Manager at The Carolina Inn
New renovation and new leadership poised to move award-winning historic hotel forward
Having unveiled a historically significant renovation deemed the most comprehensive and most exciting in its 89-year history, The Carolina Inn is positioned to greatly broaden its appeal under this new leadership. Along with completely remodeling the guestrooms and extensively renovating the function rooms and public areas, much of the Inn’s infrastructure was updated.
“The renovation offers a tremendous opportunity for the Inn to attract a much wider spectrum of guests,” Sherburne said. “The Carolina Inn now offers a more approachable and less formal atmosphere for all guests, not just for special occasions. The community is excited about the renovation. The Inn has always been known as ‘The University’s Living Room,’ and now it’s the Community’s Living Room as well.”
A constant in Sherburne’s career has been exemplary customer service ingrained from his college Walt Disney World guest services internship to consistently generating exemplary guest loyalty ratings for almost two decades. According to Sherburne, “Excellence in customer service is an important mantra to meeting all guest needs. It’s also beneficial that the Inn now offers many more creature comforts from home that guests expect and appreciate.”
Sherburne successfully opened two new hotels in his most recent GM roles at aloft Chapel Hill (July 2010-October 2013) and Four Points by Sheraton RDU (June 2009-July 2010). He also helped the properties garner an array of accolades: 2011 Hotel of the Year (No. 2 in 2012) by Starwood Hotels & Resorts for all aloft Hotels in North America; 2011 New Hotel of the Year by Interstate Hotels Crossroads Division; 2011/12/13 Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor; and Top 10 percent of all Starwood North American Four Points properties.
Sherburne helped create and launch a new hotel development unit as Vice President of Hotel Operations and Project Development for East West Partners Club & Lodging Management in Chapel Hill from April 2006-March 2009. In the process, he served as Acting GM of the University Inn Chapel Hill and managed its shutdown prior to a September 2007 demolition to make way for the East 54 mixed-use development that included the aloft Chapel Hill hotel.
During his 11 years at The Siena Hotel, a AAA Four Diamond award-winning boutique property in Chapel Hill, Sherburne rose through the ranks from Director of Catering to Director of Sales, Marketing and Public Relations to General Manager. Sherburne worked with Town of Chapel Hill planners three years on an expansion project. Also through his efforts, The Siena generated one of the Triangle’s highest average nightly accommodation rates and restaurant average check total in Il Palio, North Carolina’s only Four Diamond Italian restaurant.
Prior to moving to North Carolina in 1995, Sherburne worked five years at Vermont’s Smugglers Notch, a year-round resort ranked as the Best Family Resort in the United States by Better Homes & Gardens and Family Circle.
While completing his hospitality and business degree at Johnson State College in Vermont, he learned from the prestigious Walt Disney World guest services internship. He also participated in North Carolina State University’s School of Design Masters Degree Program completing tourism planning projects in Italy and Venezuela.
Sherburne remains very active in the community currently serving on the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau Board of Advisors (a past chairman) and the Orange County Economic Development Advisory Board. A past president of the Triangle Area Hotel & Motel Association, he served many roles with the Chapel Hill/Carrboro Chamber of Commerce on its Board of Directors, Foundation for a Sustainable Community and Government Relations Committee. In 2003, Triangle Business Journal recognized him as a “40 under 40” Movers & Shakers Award winner.
Sherburne and his wife Maria live in Chapel Hill with their 11 year old son Samuel, who will soon visit his 35th different state. An avid runner and member of the Fleet Feet Running Group, Mark recently ran in his third Rex Healthcare Half Marathon in Raleigh.
