Crossroads Chapel Hill Hosts February 25 Bubbles & Pearls Cooking Class & Dinner with Acclaimed Southern Foodie Hoppin’ John

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (January 2015) – The Carolina Inn, A Destination Hotel that opened in 1924, announces that its award-winning Crossroads Chapel Hill is hosting a special Bubbles & Pearls Cooking Class & Dinner on Thursday, February 25.

The five-course dinner features acclaimed book author and food writer John Martin Taylor and oyster farmer Chris Matteo from Chadwick Creek Oysters in Bayboro, NC.

John Martin Taylor, also known as Hoppin’ John, is a culinary historian best known for his expertise on the cooking of the American South. The New York Times referred to him as “the lowcountry food maven” and he is often credited with restoring many traditional southern dishes. Gourmet Magazine said of Taylor: “Artisanal food supplier and cookbook author John Martin Taylor...fueled the back-to-the-stone-ground-grits movement.... Taylor’s coarse grits and more finely ground cornmeal are used as polenta from Puglia to Puget Sound.”

The evening kicks off with a champagne reception at 6 pm on the front porch followed by dinner in an intimate cooking class setting led by Executive Chef James Clark and John Martin Taylor at Crossroads Chapel Hill.

The Bubbles & Pearls Cooking Class & Dinner begins at 6 pm with a trio of passed oyster selections, shucking and story telling from John, James and Chris. The dinner features a Traditional Low Country Oyster Stew, Chilled Oyster Cocktail, Carolina Oyster Pie and Oyster Sausage & Mushroom Gravy Creamy Hoppin John Taylors Grits. Dessert will be John Martin Taylor’s Sweet Potato Cake & Brown Butter Ice Cream. A selection of champagne from Italy, Spain, France and North Carolina will be served throughout the evening.

Secure your seat today to indulge in a unique experience of culinary delights and Southern-soaked culture. $90 per person (includes tax and gratuity and for adults 21 and older).
