New Crossroads Chapel Hill One-Month Checkup

Executive Chef James Clark provides his initial prognosis

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (November 2015) – The new Crossroads Chapel Hill opened more than a one ago as a crafted dining experience unique to Chapel Hill. Share a meal or cocktail with friends and family in the historic setting of The Carolina Inn, A Destination Hotel. With its distinctly southern soul and, specifically, its North Carolina Spirit, Crossroads infuses dining experiences with energy, great food and a comforting sense of place.

Even with a new name, new menu, new venue and more seating, Crossroads Chapel Hill strives to build upon its already stellar reputation – Four-Stars by Forbes Travel Guide for 15 straight years and AAA’s Four Diamond rating for 13 straight years as Carolina Crossroads – and become more welcoming to newer generations and young professionals and serve as a central gathering place for UNC students, faculty, staff and Chapel Hill residents and visitors.

Chef James Clark’s menus focus on grown, caught and raised ingredients that are sourced regionally to produce his interpretation of Carolina Cuisine.

With a rebuilt kitchen at his disposal to accommodate 50 more seats in the new restaurant and bar configuration, Clark recently shared some perspectives one month into this new journey:

How would you describe the past month?
It’s been very busy as our guests love the new space and have really enjoyed the food. One of the coolest things has been the overall acceptance of this bold new chapter of the Crossroads Chapel Hill.

How have guests reacted to the new spaces?
It’s an entirely new ambiance and vibe. In essence, we now have four different dining areas: restaurant and bar indoors and front porch and patio pavilion outdoors. The new bar area is larger than before and constantly buzzing with activity. The pavilion is beautiful and a great outdoor location to socialize around our new fire pits. The transition from the indoor to outdoor spaces is seamless and welcoming.

What was your biggest fear?
We eliminated the long-time lunch buffet with some trepidation. Fortunately our guests love the new lunch “Inn Tray” which helps validate that decision. Paying homage to the historic cafeteria, a selection of entrées are paired with the soup du jour, green salad, a slice of seasonal pie and Ice Tea or Lemonade.

What are some of the more popular dinner dishes?
We are serving lots of Wild Boar Meatloaf, Short Rib Pot Roast and “Two Hands” Fried Chicken. I reintroduced my North Carolina Oysters dish that is also a hot seller.

What are your thoughts about Sunday brunch?
Our brunch crowd is increasing each week as more diners are discovering our Sunday brunch is a hidden gem in Chapel Hill.

How about the new Pittsboro Street Provisions?
Our Grab-and-Go market opens daily during the breakfast and lunch hours for guests and passersby who do not have the time to dine in our restaurant. We’ve partnered with Muddy Dog Roasting Company who supplies our coffee and people love it! Our overnight baker laminates the croissants and Danish dough by hand with fresh butter. The Kale & Spinach Croissants and the Pecan Sticky Buns are amazing!
