In addition to enjoying Zogry’s history book, guests will certainly notice many of the hotel’s North Carolina-made furnishings. Throughout the corridors on each floor of The Carolina Inn are also images of notable UNC-Chapel Hill alumni and faculty (almost 600 in all). The images are divided into 12 groupings that represent the various academic departments and schools and contain many famous figures.

A fixture on the National Register of Historic Places and a member of Historic Hotels of America, The Carolina Inn has been a central part of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for almost a century. Built as a private hotel by distinguished alumnus John Sprunt Hill in 1924, it was envisioned as “a cheerful inn for visitors, a town hall for the state, and a returning home for sons and daughters of alma mater.” The Hill family generously donated The Carolina Inn to the University in 1935, with the stipulation that the profits, after expenses, were to support the North Carolina Collection in Wilson Library.
Built on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill in 1924 by John Sprunt Hill – distinguished alumnus, successful businessman and University trustee – The Carolina Inn’s original concept was “to provide for the special wants and comforts of the University alumni...and University visitors.” The historical Carolina Inn features 185 charming and well-appointed guestrooms including 7 luxury suites.
