Step outside the doors of The Carolina Inn and enjoy “The Southern Part of Heaven.” Begin by taking a stroll through the oldest university in America, chartered in 1789. Stop at the Old Well which stands at the heart of campus as the visual symbol of UNC Chapel Hill. Then meander your way through McCorkle Place until you reach Morehead Planetarium, one of the largest planetariums in the U.S. offering multi-media star shows and stellar exhibits. By now, you’ve worked up an appetite and it’s the perfect time to head to Suttons, a local classic and a true UNC landmark, for a burger, vintage bottle drink and hand-dipped ice cream. As you make your way back to the Inn, observe a variety of artwork ranging from ancient to 21st century at the Ackland Art Museum. Conclude your walk by enjoying craft spirits and delectable appetizers on The Carolina Inn’s Front Porch or by the fire pits on our Pavilion Terrace. Use the Front Porch access to exit the Inn; make a right on Cameron Ave. and then left on Columbia St. Turn right on E. Franklin St. Turn right on Raleigh St. Cross Boundary St. and veer left on Country Club Rd. Just past the South Rd. intersection, make a right on Ridge Rd. Veer right into the second parking lot then veer left. Make a right back on Ridge Rd. Take a right on Manning Dr. Continue down this street until it meets South Columbia St. and turn right. The Carolina Inn will be .5 miles on your left.
Use the Front Porch access to exit the Inn and veer right. Cross the intersection of Cameron Ave. and Columbia St. and make a right on Cameron Ave. The beautiful Coker Arboretum will be .6 miles on your left. Bear left on S. Boundary St. Make a right on Park Pl. and then right on Battle Branch Trail. Follow signs to the Chapel Hill Community Center. The trail will split at a bridge – keep to the left. Continue on Battle Branch Trail. Turn left on Shepherd Ln. Pass the Community Center Park and head towards the Rose Garden. Run through the garden and make a left on Bolin Creek Trail. Take a left at MLK Blvd. which merges into Columbia St. Jog up the hill for 2 miles and cross through Cameron Ave. The Inn will be on your right.
Take a step back in time and head west to a Federal style planation house built in 1815 in Hillsborough, North Carolina, one of the oldest communities in the state. Today, the house sits on 60 of the original 503 acres along the Eno River and historic Old Indian Trading Path. Take in fresh air and enjoy the beautifully manicured grounds at Ayr Mount along with the Poet’s walk and other scenic trails. Next, head to a Chapel Hill landmark Southern Season, one of the largest specialty-only gourmet markets in the U.S. recognized by self-proclaimed foodies and culinary masters alike as one of the very best.
